Make the Most of the Break: Skills, Scholarships & Confidence

Wednesday Wisdom

The holiday break is a great opportunity to pause, reflect, and get a head start on the next semester. Even small steps now can help you feel more confident, reduce stress, and set yourself up for success. Here are a few things you can try:

1. Reflect on Your Semester

  • Think about what went well and what challenges you faced.
  • Identify 1–3 skills or habits you’d like to strengthen next semester (research, writing, organization, or balancing school and life).
  • Celebrate your wins—no matter how small, they matter!

2. Build Skills, Low-Stress

  • Try short, low-pressure exercises: a 20-minute research task, a micro-writing assignment, or organizing notes for upcoming courses.
  • Start early on scholarship applications or other opportunities while deadlines are light.
  • Seek guidance and tips online: check YouTube tutorials, your university website, or reputable blogs to help you navigate challenges. Using available resources can save time, build confidence, and make learning easier.

3. Boost Your Confidence

  • Set 1–2 personal goals for the upcoming semester focused on skills and habits—not grades.
  • Remember that consistent, small actions now can make a big difference in how prepared and confident you feel when classes start again.

Resources

Students aren’t the only ones navigating the holiday season. Parents and supporters play an important role too. If you’re a parent looking for ways to help your teen manage holiday stress and stay connected, check out this week’s resource:

Holiday Stress and Your Teen: Why Connection Matters More Than Perfection
This week, I’m sharing a resource especially for parents! I met Neesha B, a life coach and educational consultant, at a networking event a few months ago, and she has a fantastic newsletter for parents of teens. Recently, she posted this blog:

The holidays are supposed to bring joy, but between academic deadlines, social events, financial pressures, and family expectations, they often bring overwhelm instead. Neesha shares ways to make stronger connections with your teen, tips for supporting them when things get stressful, and a FAQ for helping your family navigate the holidays.
