Wednesday WisdomThere are Multi-Level Marketing businesses that specifically target students, so I want to make sure that students are familiar with these and can look out for them. MLMs are businesses that often encourage their sales reps to use unethical sales and recruitment tactics. While they sell products or services, more emphasis is placed on recruiting more sales reps and this is more lucrative in their compensation schemes. The products are overpriced in order to pay a variety of levels of commissions. But one of the main reasons I would advise students (or anyone) to not participate in these business models is actually because of the lack of protections. Because sales reps are independent contractors, they don't get basic worker protections like a required minimum wage, paycheque deductions, or standardized working hours. This means that sales reps can do a ton of work without being paid. These companies can also terminate sales reps easily, and sometimes the companies just shut down with very little notice, or cancel their MLM structure. This recently happened with Rodan & Fields and also Beautycounter. The reps found themselves without an employer on very short notice. You can read the full resource here for more info. Wednesday Wisdom I have worked with hundreds (maybe even thousands) of university students, and something I've heard a lot is that they just want to finish their degrees and get out into the world. I always ask these students "Why? What are you in such a hurry for?" I know that 4 years can seem like a long time - as I say this, I'm in my 5th year of a 6-year PhD that I thought I would finish in 4 years. So I get it! But most students only do one degree. So this could very well be your only...
Wednesday Wisdom January is a tough time of year. We got a week or so when the university shut down, which is nice, but getting organized in January is a whole other story! It feels like it takes the whole month just to get back in the groove, and then suddenly you're 1/3 of the way through the semester. A lot of students who feel like this will decide it's time to "catch up" because they feel behind. And while there may be things that you need to catch up on, this can also turn into a trap...
