Wednesday WisdomCan you embrace your procrastination so it stresses you out less? I've been seeing some suggestions lately to do this. If you're a procrastinator like me, why not just accept it and use that deadline to motivate you? I have mixed feelings about this... on the one hand, I'm probably going to do it anyways, so why not just plan for it and take some of the stress out? But on the other hand, it's still procrastinating and I could probably do better work if I gave myself more time. I'm going to give this a try and see how it goes. How about you? Hit reply and let me know what you think about embracing your procrastination! I also recently read this article on procrastination from University Affairs. This one talks about how the view of procrastination has become more negative over time. Again, could we just adjust how we perceive procrastination? Also debates whether smartphones have made it easier to procrastinate or not, because we've always had something else to do, even before smart phones. Check it out! ResourcesI think that some folks are looking for summer jobs so I wanted to share some new resources I've discovered. First, here are some new (to me) job boards from Career Contessa. This may give you some new places to search! Next, watch this video on LinkedIn job posting scams to look out for (from Isabella Lanter). I always think students should avoid MLM's (multi-level marketing, aka direct sales) because the vast majority of people don't make any money on these. The video above mentions them, but I've often seen Vector Marketing (Cutco) try to recruit students, so check out this video (the first story) to learn more about this predatory company. And, finally if you're thinking of going to the U.S. for grad school, check out Gradconmigo's summer program here! Wednesday Wisdom I have worked with hundreds (maybe even thousands) of university students, and something I've heard a lot is that they just want to finish their degrees and get out into the world. I always ask these students "Why? What are you in such a hurry for?" I know that 4 years can seem like a long time - as I say this, I'm in my 5th year of a 6-year PhD that I thought I would finish in 4 years. So I get it! But most students only do one degree. So this could very well be your only...
Wednesday Wisdom January is a tough time of year. We got a week or so when the university shut down, which is nice, but getting organized in January is a whole other story! It feels like it takes the whole month just to get back in the groove, and then suddenly you're 1/3 of the way through the semester. A lot of students who feel like this will decide it's time to "catch up" because they feel behind. And while there may be things that you need to catch up on, this can also turn into a trap...
